THE GOOD, THE BAD & THE UGLY

Peoples been shootin' their mouths off! We handle ourselves. No qualms.

The Good
A letter in last week's Venue magazine..

The Bad
A comment left on the Drowned In Sound forum (don't ask what i was doing on that). Below is how i imagine Zapsta lives his life (slagging off bands from the top of his indie castle)..

The Ugly
A podcast about Fence Records (we get played about half way through). A strange one this. Mr Toad starts off by saying he doesn't like us then by the end sounds like he's our biggest fan?? I Think he's confused himself. Listen to the whole podcast by going over to his blog.

Listen to an edited audio clip of him drunkenly rambling on about us HERE.

Right. Let's see if I can clarify this without getting myself into a further pickle. I'm sober this time, which should help.

Some of your stuff I really like, but when it get too experimental I start to lose it a little, largely because I have never really been into that sort of music.

That said, I really much, much prefer a band to be as creative as you lot are (in all endeavours, web, animation, music, the lot) than to simply target the charts with three minute pop songs, even if I find it less hummable half the time.

And I have a lot of time for Fence who always seek out less straightforwardly commercial acts and always seem to try and find something a little different, confident that their audience will give it a chance, show it some respect and really listen.

So for all it's not always my thing, I do like some of your songs, and I really like the way you go about things. And you were one of the bands at Homegame that caused the most excitement, judging by everything I heard, so you must be doing something right.

Is that better? It's shorter, anyway, but I don't know if it's much clearer. Hopefully.

Cheers lads.

And I don't want to keep digging when I'm already in a bit of a hole, but it might be worth taking a little note of what Zapsta said in one respect: I also found the YBF clips, or whatever they were, a little bit distracting. The other animations were much more abstract and complemented the music much better, but that one was so literal that I found myself occasionally doing too much watching and not enough listening. I know it's a difficult balance when using visuals with music, and I don't have any experience or authority to talk on the subject, but just thought I'd mention it.

Ignore the personal insults though. The DiS boards are notorious for people like that, being snarky just to show everyone that they Just Aren't Impressed with the world. We all did it when we were young, to an extent, I guess, but that doesn't mean it deserves to be taken the slightest bit seriously.

Really do keep up the good work, and I mean that sincerely. Better half an OLO Worms than a dozen Razorlights any day of the week.
